Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was recognized by Public Opinions with the Great Lakes Peace Champion in appreciation of his contribution towards ensuring total peace and stability in Uganda and his commitment to ensure peace and stability in the Great Lakes Region. Museveni became President of the Republic of Uganda on January 29, 1986 after leading a successful five-year liberation struggle. He went to the bush with 26 other young men and organized the National Resistance Movement and National Resistance Army (NRM/NRA) to oppose the tyranny that previous regimes had unleashed upon the population.
The push for Kampala started on January 17th from different parts of the central region. While General Salim Saleh was the field commander, Museveni was the overall commander. They captured power on 26th January, 1986.After victory, he formed a broad-based government that helped to unite the country’s political groups. Previous to the struggle of 1981-1986, Museveni had been one of the leaders in the anti-Amin resistance of 1971-1979 that had led to the fall of that monstrous regime.

Museveni, who has been politically active since his student days at Ntare School, Mbarara, in South West Uganda, studied political science at the University of Dar es Salaam, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science. Museveni inherited an economy that was totally collapsed. He, however, enjoyed the support of the international community in order to revitalize it. Museveni initiated economic policies designed to combat key problems such as hyperinflation and the balance of payments.
The infrastructure is far better than he found it, new schools and universities have been constructed, communication has improved 100 fold just like the banking and industrial sectors. Museveni has initiated dramatic programmes that are destined to transform the lives of Ugandans forever. Grassroots-based programmes in health, safe water provision and mass education have replaced the colonial and post-colonial programmes that did not address the needs of the majority of Ugandans. Under his leadership, the government has registered monumental landmarks in Agriculture; Operation Wealth Creation, Emancipation of Women, Tourism, Democracy, Peace and Stability, and Water and Sanitation.
In 1982 President Museveni waged a protracted Liberation Struggle which culminated into Liberation of Uganda from Tyrannical Regimes on 26th January 1986. Thanks to the fighters of the National Resistance Army (NRA),President Museveni helped to establish a strong foundation to achieve total transformation of Uganda. The period from 1962-1985 had erased the rule of law and constitutionalism in Uganda.
President Museveni has been able to restore the rule of law and constitutionalism in Uganda,President Museveni has been able to maintain total peace and stability throughout Uganda and he has been working for total annihilation of all subversive groups which can hinder total transformation of Uganda.
The New Durable Constitution for Uganda. President Museveni organized and mobilized the people of Uganda who elected the Constituency Assembly Delegates (CA) who promulgated the Constitution of Uganda and came into force in 1995. President Museveni spearheaded the promulgation and enactment of the new Constitution for Uganda in 1995 which is the basis for social economic transformation of Uganda. Uganda now boasts of a durable, formidable and popular constitution.
President Museveni has been successful to draw Ugandans into civilized politics more than ever before,President Museveni has been able to enfranchise all Ugandans, empowered Ugandans at all levels and he has succeeded in building a robust and vibrant grassroots based democratic culture.
President Museveni as succeeded in eliminating sectarianism from Uganda Body politics and he has successfully relegated ethnicity based political association to a bygone era,President Museveni is the first Leader of Uganda to bring about a real measure of freedom of expression, freedom of association, freedom of worship, a free press and the right of political association without persecution.
President Museveni restored the vote of disenfranchised people of Uganda and he has empowered the formally marginalized groups in a special way such as; the women, the youth, People with Disabilities, and the workers. All these groups are now fully represented in parliament and at all levels throughout the country. President Museveni is indeed a Uganda Peace and Development Champion,President Museveni reintroduced the “One Person, One Vote” System and reforms in the electoral process to make voting free and fair.
President Museveni introduced Regular Free and Fair elections at all levels in Uganda. Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Council elections are held regularly where Ugandans freely participate and elect their own leaders,Museveni supported the introduction and implementation of photographic registers to eliminate multiple registrations and vote rigging,President Museveni supported the introduction and adoption of Affirmative Action Policy and he has been at the forefront of supporting it .He has continued to support women,youth,PWDs,workers and the elderly to participate in policy and decision making process at all levels. Affirmative Action is promoted in all organs of NRM Party and in the Government of Uganda.

H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is credited for building a National Peoples centred Army called the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).Uganda had never had a national Army of its own. Today Uganda has a National Army as a result of the work and aspirations of H.E Yoweri kaguta Museveni. This truly explains why Ugandans in different parts of Uganda voted Museveni to be declared a Ugandan Peace and Development Champion.
President Museveni was declared by Pubic Opinions as the Great Lakes Region Peace Champion as Italy build Momentum to ensure Responsible Investment on 31st March 2021 during the Great lakes Peace Conference held at Kabira Country club and presided over by H.E Massimmilliano Mazzanti the Ambassador of Italy to Uganda and H.E Dr Patrick Bitature who was declared the Uganda Social Investment Champion. On the same occasion, Public Opinions also recognised the Uganda Top 20 Most Admired and Influential Media Personalities for the year 2020/2021.

On Wednesday 31st March 2021, H.E Massimiliano Mazzanti the Ambassador of Italy to Uganda presided over the Award Ceremony of Uganda TOP20 Most Influential and Admired Personalities organised by Public Opinions International at Kabira Country Hotel in kampala where he announced to the Young Leaders that The Italian President had congratulated President Museveni Kaguta Yoweri Tibuhaburwa upon his victory in the 2021 Presidential Election.
President Mattarella, in a message sent to Kampala through the Italian Embassy on March 26th, 2021, said he would like to wish President Museveni “every success in your high office”. “Relations between our countries are characterized by bonds of friendship which should further be deepened. In this context, I trust that together with our countries can give new impetus to bilateral and international cooperation- also in the framework of relations between Kampala and the European Union- for the benefit of stability and sustainable development in the region, ” President Mattarella said.
H.E Massimillian at the same event presided over the recognition of H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni with The Great Lakes Region Peace Champion Award while Former PrimeMinister Amama Mbabazi was recognized with the Public Leadership Champion Award of the Year yet Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba received the Strategic Leadership Champion Award from a field based firm known as Public Opinions International led by Luzindana Adam Buyinza and Ms Desire Muhooza as its Head of Strategy.

At the 2021 Award Ceremony for Uganda TOP20 Most Influential and Admired Media personality, H.E Massimilliano Mazzanti Ambassador of Italy to Uganda announced that the President of Italy Officially sent a congratulatory message endorsing Gen Museveni as winner of the 2021 Presidential Election. He stated that Italy is the first european Nation to congratulate President Museveni.
