Boxing star Manny Pacquiao said on Sunday he will run for president of the Philippines next year, after railing against corruption in government and what he calls President Rodrigo Duterte’s cozy relationship with China.

Manny completed his elementary education at ‘Saavedra Saway Elementary School’ in General Santos City.He dropped out of high school due to poverty and left home at the age of 14.Pac-Man was born in absolute poverty and struggled to rise to the top with now an estimated net worth of $220 million.

Manny Pacquiao, the champion boxer and Philippines senator, said Sunday that he will run for president in 2022, multiple outlets reported, in a potential de facto match against current President Rodrigo Duterte.

Pacquiao, a former Duterte ally, has criticized the president for being corrupt and too close to China.

Duterte, who is barred by the constitution from seeking a second term, was nominated as vice president by a separate faction of their shared PDP-Laban party, the Associated Press reported.

Pacquiao, who grew up poor before becoming one of the world’s highest-paid athletes, said his campaign will also focus on poor youth empowerment.

KEY BACKGROUND

Pacquiao was removed as president of the PDP-Laban party in July after criticizing Duterte for not confronting China over military and commercial ships operating in Philippine territory, and investigating the government for corruption.

Pacquiao alleged that about $200 million in cash aid meant for poor families was missing in official accounting. Despite his fame—he has been a legislator for a decade and is a source of national pride as one of the winningest boxers of all time—he polls below other candidates, namely Sara Duterte-Carpio, the president’s daughter and mayor of Davao, one of the Philippines’ largest cities.

Pacquiao, 42, has simultaneously served as a legislator and fought professionally for the last decade. After losing a fight to restore his welterweight title in August, though, he hinted that he was considering retirement.

Early Life

Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao was born on December 17, 1978, to parents Dionesia Dapidran-Pacquiao and Rosalio Pacquiao. He was raised in Kibawe, which is located in the Bukidnon province of Mindanao, Philippines.

When he was a teenager, Pacquiao left his family and boarded a ship to Manila, Philippines, in hopes of training as a boxer and launching a career in the sport. Not long after, in January of 1995, his goals gained some traction; at age 16, he stepped into the ring for his first professional bout, against Edmund Ignacio.
