AFRICA’S TRAGEDY: MUSEVENI THE CELEBRATED CONTRADICTION OF SELF
By Odaka Asuman
Since he came to power, Mr. Museveni has been a tyrant and democrat at different times, a Hitler and Gandhi, a devil and angel. Will establish institutions to fight corruption yet he protects the corrupt, establishes courts yet doesn’t yet injustice is his middle name, midwives the constitution which never respects, he goes into Political campaign whose outcome he says can only be determined by the last word of himself calling a ballot a mere piece of paper. For 36 years, Mr. Museveni has ruled and misruled, kept order and fomented chaos, restored and ruined Uganda, secured the country and caused insecurity.
Those who have known him since his childhood say his secrecy and concealment of his real intention is an old habit that will die hard.
In “The Museveni I Know”, Boniface Byanyima says he couldn’t risk marrying off his daughter – Winnie to the man he brought up. “I told my daughter Museveni was not a reliable character,” Byanyima narrated in the observer newspaper of May 19th 2017.
“There is one side, which he reveals to you, and another side he keeps to himself.” One side that one of the world’s longest-serving rulers has shown to whoever cares to see is his commitment to Pan-Africanism.
Besides claiming to have fought in the war against Portuguese colonial rule in Mozambique, Museveni in his youth days was a fervent communist who routinely vowed to crush capitalists for exploiting peasants.
He however, abandoned his communism position towards the end of his brutal Luwero rebellion in the mid-1980s, the fading“revolutionary leader” continued claiming allegiance to all efforts that seek to unite and improve on the welfare of the Black race.
His support for the SPLA against the acts of oppression from Khartoum, his contraversial military deployment in Somalia, was allegedly mounted in this spirit of Pan-Africanism.
Contrary to such talk, Mr. Museveni is one of the principles backers to the effort that saw Sudan get balkanized.

This was an Anti-Pan Africanism action and a project of the imperialists part of which contributed greatly to the death, displacement and starvation of millions of black people.
Such cruel acts to the members of his own race cannot claim devotion to Pan-Africanism. In the field of the economy, far from his own claimed NRam objective of building a strong intergraded self sustaining Economy, the privatization of virtually everything was done merely to obey the West, blindly placing strategic sectors of the economy like banking, power generation, mining communication e.t.c entirely in the hands of forigners something that even Idd Amin Dada whom Mr. Museveni has tried hard to dispise couldn’t do.
Mr. Museveni came to believe that the West gives but also takes, and moved quickly to secure a page in its good books even at the expense of his country.
As a former Marxist, Mr. Museveni knows the ramifications of completely surrendering the banking, transport, electricity, water, mining and other key areas to the venture capitalist.
He probably knew the consequences of cutting government expenditure on higher education. But he had no option but to sell off the country to win the favor of the imperialists, the same ones he spent years castigating.
He wanted their favour which come in many forms. Besides accessing World Bank loans, puppets of the west have the freedom to torture, arbitrarily arrest/detain, torture and sometimes even butcher his own citizens without attracting much international condemnation.
They may also choose to entrench themselves in power for life without incurring foreign pressure. With selfish privileges of that kind Mr. Museveni doubled and multiplied his obedience to the mighty west.
At the center of the West’s quest for global dominance is the elimination of every government opposed to its influence, especially those that assert their ideological and practical independence.
Unable to commit its own troops to every corner of the world, Washington finds it convenient to use unaccountable rulers in developing countries to execute some of their missions and plans.
This has made Mr. Museveni to appear as if he is placing foreign interests ahead of the aspirations of Uganda, defined himself as an ideologically double edged revolutionary who doesn’t think beyond satisfying his own agendas and desires of power and amassing property.
Equally questionable is Mr. Museveni’s commitment to freedom. The situation in Uganda, to be clear, may not be as bad as it is it used to be although it seems to be tending towards there if the situation is not reversed where even the slightest expression of dissent is treated with brute and incarceration.
A more close examination of these freedoms, however, reveals striking similarities between the Kampala ‘democrat’ and the autocrats of the past or even of other countries.
As soon as he senses that his grip on power is threatened, Museveni unmasks his true identity. Opposition politicians are on a daily basis recipients of all sorts of state persecution on trumped up charges or even worse forms of oppression.
Political parties have become too weakened to preoccupy the him and this explains the reason he has concentrated all his wrath on the particular figures.
Part of this weakness of these political organizations is surely the design of the government that wants to retain power forever although some are blamed on opposition parties themselves.
Some of their leaders are as corrupt as the regime they seek to replace, their structures wake up only during election time, their individual differences matter to them more than their common good.
This is the kind of opposition that Museveni wants; it’s the kind that he spares his wrath.
Mr. Museveni also wants a media that does not call him to account. By both brawl and bribe, he has succeeded in bringing nearly all mainstream media within his orbit. And that is why in his speeches, freedom of speech is not part of him.
Lastly, Mr. Museveni’s conduct shows that Africa and Africans immediate threat and dangers are not from the west but from the African intransigent (mis) leaders.
